Home Safety Programs and Financial Assistance

Most Alabama Area Agencies on Aging have launched an Assisting with Independence and Mobility (AIM) program. This community service project initiative works to provide safe and healthy independence and mobility solutions for those disabled within Alabama. Community Service Project examples, including:

  • Grab Bars

  • Handrails

  • Wheelchair Ramps

  • Porch or Step Repair

  • Yard Cleanup or Maintenance

  • Other Low-Cost Home Modifications and Maintenance (by approval)

Although community service projects offered have no cost to clients, the AIM program relies on the generosity of the community's donations and volunteer efforts. Client and volunteer cost-sharing is always encouraged and appreciated.

For more information about receiving help through AIM, volunteer opportunities, sponsoring an AIM client, or opportunities to make charitable donations to the program, contact your local Alabama Area Aging Agency.

Home Maintenance Ministries

Many ministries are available to those who need assistance to stay safely in their homes. Volunteers make critical handyman home repairs including bathrooms, plumbing, roofs, floors, and doors. They also install handrails and build wheelchair ramps. Common services, include:

  • Building wheelchair ramps

  • Installing handrails

  • Repairing minor roof leaks

  • Replacing water heaters

  • Replacing rotten porches / floors

  • Replacing minor plumbing leaks

  • Securing pest control services

  • Providing appliances

To find out if a church in your local area provides a similar program, a good first start is to contact your local Alabama Area Agency on Aging. A second option is to reach out to churches in your local communities to see if they offer similar services by making a phone call to their main office or searching on their website under programs and ministries. Many community churches will provide help and assistance with similar projects at no to low cost.
